Crash!

At about 11 p.m., on May 31, 1977, the Jefferson County police helicopter crash landed near the top of the lookout in Iroquois Park. The pilot, Officer Dave Hahn, called in that the helicopter had gone down and his partner, Officer Don Goodfleisch, was injured. Within minutes, members of both the Louisville and Jefferson County Police Departments, the Federal Aviation Administration and EMS were on scene, and Officer Goodfleisch was transported to the hospital. He was found to have suffered minor back injuries from the impact.

When the helicopter went down, citizens who were in the park ran to assist and held the helicopter steady to prevent it from rolling over, allowing the officers to climb out. It was later found that the helicopter had suffered engine failure. Hahn tried to land it on the lookout but did not do so because there were a number of people there, so he elected to land on the hillside instead. The helicopter was damaged, but was ultimately repaired and returned to service.
