Welcome!

Welcome to the new website for the Louisville Metropolitan Public Safety Museum.  It is a work in progress, some pages are suppressed, so please keep coming back as more content is added to the website.

The Museum was established on January 19, 2017, with the filing of its Articles of Incorporation with the Kentucky Secretary of State as a nonprofit agency. Its first order of business was to accept the priceless collection of police memorabilia owned Captain Morton “Mort” Childress, retired Louisville Division of Police.  Captain Childress passed away only a few months later, and he is truly the guardian angel of the museum effort. Since its establishment, the organization has become a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization, thanks to the help of founding member E. Douglas “Doug” Hamilton, retired Louisville Police Chief.

The Board Membership includes representatives from the public safety agencies it honors, including police departments, fire departments, EMS and civil defense / emergency management, as well as the telecommunicators who are the ears and voices for all.  Our goal is to represent the full panoply of public safety, past and present, in artifacts, pictures and stories, as well as actively promoting public safety in the future, for the next generation.

As of now, the museum exists only in the virtual world, but we are working hard to make it tangible and real, with a place to tell the stories, show the pictures, understand the artifacts and honor the public responders who are, after all, the heart and soul of each agency.  That takes money, ideas and help, from all of you!

In future blogs, we’ll share news of the museum, new acquisitions as long as stories we’ve uncovered. For those of you are are responders, or the child or grandchild of a responder, we hope you will share stories and photos with us as well with us.

The history of the agencies we honor is made every day, After all, yesterday is history and tomorrow is the future!
