Jefferson County Police Department

  • The Jefferson County Police Department is a good example of the evolution of a law enforcement agency. For most of the history of Jefferson County, the population was concentrated in the City of Louisville, with the remainder of the county made up of farms and small villages. Just to get to the other side of the county, residents took a train! When a major crime occurred out in the county, the Louisville police usually responded … eventually. While there were county patrolmen, they were few and far between and usually worked in an “as-needed” capacity. In the 1890s, as the population grew, changes in state law put the ability to have a county police under the County Judge (now County Judge - Executive), who appointed the Chief who, for a long time, held the rank of Captain. Eventually, the Department grew to provide full-time patrols throughout Jefferson County. The Department joined with the Louisville Division of Police in 2003 to form the countywide Louisville Metro Police Department.
